Music Genres Explained
Music genres are labels for families of sound – shared rhythms, instruments, histories and communities. This page collects all our genre guides in one place, grouped by tradition, so you can follow the connections: how the blues fed rock and soul, how son cubano became salsa, or how folk songs travelled from Appalachia to indie playlists.
Each guide covers where the genre comes from, how it sounds, the key artists and songs, and where to start listening.

How Genres Connect
Genres rarely have clean borders. Jazz grew from blues and ragtime; soul joined gospel and R&B; reggaeton built on Jamaican dancehall; bossa nova slowed samba down and borrowed jazz harmony. Hindi Zahra’s own music is a good example of this mixing, blending Amazigh traditions from Morocco with folk, blues and jazz. Explore her songs to hear it.
